Slugging – a Unique Commuter Solution in Northern Virginia

“Slugging” is a term used to describe a unique “free” form of commuting found in Northern Virginia – it’s been a way of life for commuters for over 30 years. Slugging is simple. A car needing additional passengers to meet the required 3-person HOV lane minimum number of passengers picks up passengers at a designated slug line location. No money is exchanged because of the mutual benefit of passengers needing a ride and drivers need riders to use the HOV lanes.
